Grape Production Injuries and Prevention

BSE-186NP (BSE-335NP) According to the Virginia Vineyard Association Report (2019), 2 of 3 producers see workforce and labor as a key challenge facing the industry over the near future. Many tasks such as dormant pruning, shoot suckering and crop harvesting are done repetitively by hand and can result in musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) among the workers. As the number of workers in the industry increases, it is reasonable to expect a significant increase in both the number of injuries and treatment cost. The goal of this publication is to prevent or reduce injuries among vineyard workers by familiarizing them and their supervisors with the operations associated with grape production, common injuries, and steps they can take to prevent injuries with or without the use of assistive technologies.
